Case Brief

On the evening of May 3, 2007, three-year-old Madeleine Beth McCann disappeared from her family's ground-floor holiday apartment at the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz, a small coastal village in Portugal's Algarve region. Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, both physicians from Leicestershire, England, had left Madeleine and her two-year-old twin siblings asleep while they dined with friends at a tapas restaurant roughly 55 meters away. The group had established a routine of checking on the children at intervals throughout the evening. When Kate McCann returned to the apartment at approximately 10:00 PM, she found Madeleine's bed empty and a window in the children's bedroom open.

The Portuguese Policia Judiciaria led the initial investigation. In the weeks that followed, British-Portuguese property consultant Robert Murat was named the first formal suspect (arguido) but was later cleared. In September 2007, Kate and Gerry McCann were themselves briefly named arguidos, a status lifted in July 2008 when the Portuguese attorney general archived the case for lack of evidence. Forensic detection dogs brought from the UK alerted to scent traces in the apartment and in a car the McCanns later rented, but subsequent DNA analysis proved inconclusive and could not be attributed to Madeleine.

In 2011, London's Metropolitan Police launched Operation Grange, a dedicated review that grew into a full investigation. The operation, which has cost over 13 million pounds, identified more than 600 persons of interest and pursued leads across multiple countries. In June 2020, German prosecutors publicly identified Christian Brueckner, a convicted sex offender who had been living in the Praia da Luz area at the time of Madeleine's disappearance, as their prime suspect. Cell-phone records placed Brueckner's phone near the Ocean Club on the evening of May 3, 2007, and he transferred ownership of his vehicle the day after Madeleine vanished. Despite this, no charges related to Madeleine's disappearance have been filed against Brueckner. He was acquitted of separate sexual offense charges in Germany in October 2024 and released from prison in September 2025.

As of early 2026, the investigation remains formally open. Operation Grange continues with reduced staffing and funding from the UK Home Office. Portuguese authorities conducted a new search near Praia da Luz in mid-2025. Madeleine McCann has never been found, and her case remains one of the most widely followed missing-person investigations in history.

Reservoir Search - May 2023

From May 23-25, 2023, German and Portuguese investigators conducted a coordinated search of a precisely defined area along the Barragem do Arade reservoir near Silves, approximately 50 kilometers from Praia da Luz. The operation was initiated at the request of German authorities and carried out with assistance from the Portuguese Policia Judiciaria. Christian Brueckner had reportedly referred to the reservoir area as "his little paradise." Investigators used specialized equipment and excavated sections of land near the waterline. A number of items were seized during the operation. However, German prosecutors subsequently stated that the items could not yet be linked to the investigation into Madeleine's disappearance. A further search near Praia da Luz was conducted by Portuguese police in mid-2025.

June 2025 Search Operation Near Praia da Luz

Between June 3 and 5, 2025, German federal police, with the permission and cooperation of Portuguese authorities, conducted a search of rural areas between Praia da Luz and the village of Atalaia, near Lagos. The operation focused on abandoned farmhouses, derelict buildings, wells, and reservoirs in the vicinity of the cottage where Christian Brueckner had lived at the time of Madeleine's disappearance. Search teams covered approximately 120 acres of scrubland using heavy machinery including JCBs and diggers, as well as chainsaws, pickaxes, shovels, and ground-penetrating radar. A source involved with the search said it encompassed several derelict houses and water features covering "dozens of hectares." The operation was conducted at the request of the German Bundeskriminalamt (BKA), who stated they were seeking evidence that could implicate Brueckner. Items found during the search were shared with German investigators for further analysis. The search took place just months before Brueckner's release from prison in September 2025.
